The following describes how to dress the grinding wheel to maintain higher grinding efficiency and quality. Grinding is the process of grinding the abrasive grains of super-hard grinding wheels. In this process, the bond between the abrasive particles and the blunt grinding wheel abrasive particles must be removed, so that the grinding wheel abrasive particles with strong grinding performance protrude beyond the bonding point to form a sharp cutting edge. Grinding must also remove tiny materials from the holes on the surface of the grinding wheel to prevent the grinding force acting on the grinding wheel from increasing. The increase in the grinding force on the grinding wheel will cause vibration and cause surface burns. Without proper grinding, even the grinding wheel cannot obtain the high quality and dimensional consistency of the machined parts. In fact, when you buy high-quality grinding wheels, in order to obtain higher grinding performance, it is very important to dress them correctly. It can be said that shaping is part of the preparation of the grinding wheel, and the preparation of the grinding wheel is carried out while grinding the ordinary grinding wheel. For super abrasive wheels, these two processes are carried out separately. First, reshape the grinding wheel. When using superabrasive grinding wheels for grinding, use forming tools or rollers for forming. Molding usually uses a dressing rod with a ceramic bond. After forming, the grinding wheel is sharpened. Before the dressing of the grinding wheel includes shaping and grinding, it is important to ensure that the spindle bearing is under temperature (such as the usual grinding wheel grinding state). In this way, damage to the geometry of the parts and abnormal wear of the grinding wheel and dressing tools can be avoided. Tools used for dressing must be handled with care because they are usually made of a hard, wear-resistant but very brittle diamond material and are very sensitive to small cracks and breaks caused by slight bumps and slight bumps. The end result is damage to both the dresser and the grinding wheel, which is counterproductive. The amount of dressing is based on the criterion that it can restore the geometric shape of the grinding wheel and just produce a good grinding edge after several repairs.




Use a single-point dressing tool to contact the diameter direction of the grinding wheel with an inclination angle of the axis line of 10-15o. This will cause the single-point dressing tool to have a sharpening effect when it rotates regularly. The dressing tool that touches at multiple points does not need to be tilted at this angle. Instead, use the entire end face of the dressing tool to contact the surface of the grinding wheel.




   Lateral movement speed is the speed at which the dressing tool passes through the surface of the grinding wheel during dressing. It plays a key role in the surface roughness and metal removal rate required for machined parts. If the lateral movement speed is too slow, it will block the grinding wheel and damage the surface roughness and metal removal rate of the parts. Too slow lateral movement speed can also cause the grinding wheel to vibrate and burn the surface of the part. The uniform and fast lateral movement speed can dress a good grinding wheel surface, improve the grinding performance of the grinding wheel, increase the grinding efficiency, and reduce the surface roughness of the parts.

   Appropriate use of coolant can speed up dressing and improve dressing efficiency. According to experience, choosing a 3/8 inch diameter coolant can remove a lot of heat from the dresser and prolong the service life of the dresser. When the diamond dressing tool passes through the grinding wheel, install a coolant nozzle to fill the entire surface of the grinding wheel or continuously add coolant to the diamond dressing tool. When the dressing tool is in contact with the grinding wheel to start dressing, never allow the dressing tool to withdraw from the coolant. Otherwise, the diamond dressing tool will crack or break under the extreme temperature changes of cold and heat.




  Using a filter to filter the coolant with high precision, which can avoid multiple cycles of dirt or chips in the coolant. Contaminated coolant can quickly wear the grinding wheel and increase the number of dressings of the grinding wheel. Only in dry grinding (only in this case, the cooling of the diamond dressing tool can be interrupted), the dry dressing of the grinding wheel is adopted. Before leaving get off work every day, after turning off the coolant, let the grinding wheel run idle for a few minutes. This prevents the grinding wheel from cracking.




  Vibration is the enemy of dressing

This means that the balance of the grinding wheel must also be maintained, which is determined by the structural characteristics of the grinding wheel itself. If it is a high-quality grinding wheel, only proper installation can keep the grinding wheel in good balance. The even filling of coolant can sometimes help the grinding wheel to maintain balance.




  In order to prevent vibration as much as possible, the operator must firmly clamp the dressing tool on the clamp seat and leave a small amount of overhang. Only in this way can the dressing tool have sufficient rigidity. If the diamond tool is not firmly clamped during the dressing process, it will inevitably cause vibration and severe noise, causing tiny ripples on the surface of the part, causing surface strain on the part and damage to the dressing tool.
